Neverlanded are campaigning for gender awareness
Mermaids UK raises awareness for the recognition of gender dysphoria in young people and improvements in professional services. We asked Pete Bloom from Neverlanded why they have chosen to give all proceeds from their debut EP, Fluffy Unicorns United, to the award-winning charity.
Pete: It’s everybody’s birthright to feel happy and safe. Unfortunately, the pursuit of happiness is a very strange and challenging path for each. On top of that, society is always rejecting what the majority of people don’t understand. We are rejects of society, but we’re not the only ones. United, and only united, we can spread light in this world.
How did you find out about Mermaids UK and gender awareness campaigns?
Pete: I've watched a lot of TEDx videos about people and their journeys through birth, wrong gender assignment, transition, family, society and all. No matter who the speaker was, through age, nationality or religion, they all, or most of them, shared a common thing: they couldn’t see themselves in the mirror. This is something that members of our band have gone, or are still going through, from various perspectives, so supporting Mermaids was inevitable. Happy children make happy adults.
Why is it essential for musicians to support causes?
Pete: Musicians are people that can influence others. Supporting organisations that support children, and young people is an investment in humanity’s future. Mermaids UK embraces, empowers and educate children, young people and their families to achieve a happier life in the face of great adversity.
