The story of Topsy the elephant

London scuzz punks Nothingheads new single is inspired by the story of Topsy the elephant, who was electrocuted to death on Coney Island as part of a public display in 1903. The publicity stunt was claimed to be a scientific demonstration of the power of electricity by Thomas Edison, but it was later revealed that the elephant was executed for killing a spectator who had stubbed out a cigar on her truck.

Ben Coiacetto created this artwork for the single based on Topsy’s life and death at the amusement park, supposedly the first filmed death for entertainment purposes.
