What’s burning? #4

Becoming almost reliably consistent with this one. What’s Burning the fourth edition is here, as a fan of these flames I am happy to fan their flames to new fans.

This shit is so hot it’s burning a hole in the earth’s surface and melting something that has been preserved for an eternity. ‘Permafrost’ is the latest concoction from Skott 3ree and Jack Danz as the pair continue to burn peoples ears. Since their ‘Die Living’ release, I am not the only one gagging for another full-length release crafted by Danz and painted by Skott, well here it is. “Climbin’ Trees” would be my pick as both get on the mic, but the whole project should be banged before everything melts and we’re drowning in cold water.

Always keen to represent the rappers from my neck of the woods, and now with one bringing some Bristol brashness to burn like cannisters at Turbo Island (RIP); Gaza Glock linked up with Illinformed back in the Summer on ‘Frontline 97’, a gritty rap album that is soaked in Gaza’s hilarious personality, one so relatable for anyone who has spent any length of time in the UK’s Sin City. “Frontline 97” is the title track and some proper head-bounce rap with a little skit that will have you creasing, if it doesn’t then this project is not for you cause there’s plenty more of that.

Bit of a madness on this entry. Newcastle born but now London based The Chameleon has a big collaborative project called ‘The Beasts Ego Pt. 1’ that throws a net over a nice portion of the UK underground scene. If you need some of that pure Boombap this project and it’s part two successor will provide you will a lengthy diversion. ‘Code One’ features a bunch of established spitters who pass the mic around quick, sort of like a rap-flight to the UK’s underground, each emcee with their own vast menu, so if any of these deliveries hit home you can get comfy in their rabbit-hole.

Clearly skits is the underlying theme on these skin-melters. Dabbla’s music always has the comedic undertone, whether it’s tongue-in-cheek or blatant in-your-face humour, getting that personality across on the mic has always come natural. “Grinning” is taken from Dabbla and JaySun’s ‘G.W.O.A.T’ album that dropped earlier this year and finishes with a lovely insight into the overthinking pit that artists could get trapped in, but not this one. Guess that comes with experience which the pair have in absolute abundance and are willing to share like prophetic teachers to impressionable younglings- bring your notebooks and pencil case.

Finishing off with a little different gas-burner… I’m going to run out of noun phrases soon. Another from 0117, Kwazi entered my sphere recently with his ‘Therapie EP’ and it’s a good one for those a bit more in their feelings… if you have any of those. Easy listening and relatable as he fills in the gaps between himself and his last flame, spoken in a bit of French as if it wasn’t smooth enough. ‘Listerine’ is my first choice and kicks off an EP that could be sad-rap, but through this optimistic scope is more of an introspective, hopeful realisation of what on earth is going on here.
