What’s burning? #8

Kemastry

You can feel it, slowly seeping through the sturdy clouds, stretching down and scooping you up with it’s magnetic warmth, the Spring Sun is here. So is What’s Burning #8 and all of the above can of course be serendipitously applied here too.

Rebellion is something emcee and activist Kemastry has been more than flirting with for a long old time and his latest EP takes it to the next level. ‘Section 80 (I Am Revolutionary)’ is the obvious pick as Kema draws from his recent arrest and potential jail-time to set fire to heavy drums and strings with anarchistic absolution. ‘Kema Vs Kings: Revolutionary’ also has a zine to cop.

Slowing it down a touch with Sonny Mac as he drops his second single of a year which looks to be one of his busiest release wise. Bringing the positive vibes from Thailand, he links up with producers Joe Corfield and FloFilz on ‘Moonlight’ to preach some fire that seems to be forgotten these days with the current generations.

With two very recent heaters, I know keeping it on the pulse, I thought I’d dial it back to 2022 as I’ve been repeatedly administrating this ointment and think you could get a kick off it too. ‘Fetch The Poison’ was the title track of Jam Baxter’s most recent exclusively-solo drop and seems to have addictive qualities, but unlike a shitty addict I’m down to share this heat.

Didn’t think I could keep it entirely UK and one artist whose output matches his work-rate and has to feature on What’s Burning is Boldy James; of course, he’s already been cooking in 2025. ‘Token of Appreciation’ is the newest full-length Boldy joint with Chuck Strangers spinning the samples- it’s pure fire whichever way you work through it but I pick ‘Global Telling’ for you.

An artist, for me, synonymous with the sun is vocalist Greentea Peng; she has some new rays for us to bask in, and they are warming my ears thoroughly at the moment. It’s a matter of days until ‘Tell Dem It’s Sunny’ drops, and with a few early release singles already doing the rounds, I’d like to point to ‘Green’ as a nice break in the clouds.
